Summer holidays

The youngest children in our school captured the spirit of summer in this frieze with strong brush stokes of vibrant blue  superimposed by the outline of underwater creatures.  This effect was created with plastic moulds of seahorses, starfish, crabs, lobsters and fish dipped in paint.  On the beach, we have the typical fisherman and the children playing.  A big yellow sun reminds us all that summer is here and that the scholastic year is over.  Enjoy your summer holidays!

Prize Day

On Friday, 23rd April, Prize Day was held at our school.  The evening’s event celebrated the children’s achievements in all aspects.  One of the highlights was a play on Healthy Living.  The script was written by Ms. R. Fenech, a Year 4 teacher.  The music teacher took care of the choir and a whole team of teachers helped with props, lights and audio and visual effects.  The result was a truely enjoyable evening.

Happy Father’s Day

The World Cup is on every man’s mind at the moment and in the Kindergarten classes football was the theme that inspired these Father’s Day Cards.

The teachers did not stop there, however.  They prepared activities to familiarize children with the flags of their favourite teams.

By the end of the morning the children could recognize the flags of quite a good number of countries.  Then small flags were fixed on the appropriate countries on a map of the world.  The relative distance from Malta to these countries was indicated by coloured string.

However, it is this poem with their child’s footprint that is going to leave the most lasting impression on most fathers.

It’s friezing!

Children are fascinated by nature around them.  They love to listen to stories especially if they feature animals.  In this activity, taken from Dinja Waħda Action Guide, children listen to the adventures of  Fiks the butterfly.  Then all the six Kindergarten classes make part of a giant frieze.  This frieze is made from used materials like jablo, old wrapping paper, magazines and cereal boxes.  Strips of plastic create a rainy effect.  The final product is a kaleidoscope of colour that captures the children’s imagination.

Drama-Literacy Project

At the beginning of this scholastic year the College Principal asked the drama teacher, Ms. Daniella Micallef, to co-ordinate a project that would amalgamate literacy with drama.  The main aim being that of  involving children with different abilities in a project that has its inception in the children’s creative minds and is realized on stage by the composers themselves.  During the first term Year 5 children from the four College Primary Schools were divided into groups of five and given the task of  coming up with a story.  The drama teacher helped the children choose one story for each class.  These stories were turned into drama productions with art teachers helping the children to create colourful props.  At our school Year 5.1 staged the play Il-Qarnita  (The Octopus)  and Year 5.2  produced  Ir-Renju tal-Ħalib u l-Ġbejniet  (The Cheeselets and Milk Kingdom).

Mother’s Day activity

On Friday afternoon, mothers, who have children in Kindergarten, were invited to come to school.  The teachers had prepared a pleasant surprise.  The children sang nursery rhymes and then they gave their mums a small present and a Mother’s Day card which they had prepared in class.  I am sure all the mothers will cherish these memories and treasure such tokens forever.

Pirates

Pirates have always  fascinated children and a Year 3 teacher decided to build her lessons on this theme.  She started off  by giving some interesting facts about pirates.  Then she consolidated her lesson by giving children related art and craft.  They built pirate ships from milk cartons and boxes.  Children reused material to create beautiful craft.  Then they made pirate ship silhouettes on disposable plates.  The children loved every minute of these lessons.

Happy Mother’s Day

In a Year 4 class children made these beautiful cards to give to mum next Sunday.   First, the children coloured the  different parts. Then, they cut  up all the pieces and glued them to cardboard. Finally, the multi-coloured flags were hung on a piece of string to create a festive mood. You will find the template of this card in the RESOURCES BANK .

Embed 2010

Year 4 Lime and Year 4 Blue are participating in Embed 2010 for Best use of ICT with their class blogs.  The blogs were created by the teachers Mr. D. Bonnici  and Mr J. Borg respectively. Pupils are being encouraged to contribute by sending their own work: creative writings, experiences, pictures or photos.

All Year 5 and Year 6 pupils were introduced to blogs this year by the school’s eLearning Teacher.  Pupils were shown how to upload their own writings on to the Primary School Blog found on the Skola Portal (http://skola.edu.mt/).  They were also shown how to search for pictures related to their writings and then to insert them in their posts.  The aim of the sessions was to familiarise children to blogging and to  engage them in creative writing in a more innovative way.

You can view the students’ work on these links.
All these classes are also participating in Embed 2010  for Best use of ICT.

ICT across the curriculum

Last week, Year 2  pupils created a number of pictures of their favourite fruit, using Tux Paint.  This is a free Paint programme which is installed in all the class PCs.  This was done after a short discussion on Healthy Eating and watching a couple of 3 minute video songs about fruit and vegetables from the internet.

The eLearning teacher, Ms. A Giles saved their pictures and inserted them in PowerPoint.
